June 10, 2008 | Blink | Polaroid SX70

Okay, so I have been ignoring this space quite a bit lately. Well, more than quite a bit. Lots. Ever since Mae was born, I have lacked focus, trying to do too many things at one time, and as a result, accomplished very little, except take of the house and my family. I'm only now getting back into the habit of taking photos. But, as hopeless as that just sounded, I'm happier than I have been in a very long time, and loving being at home with the girls and Bob. The house always seems to be in a state of chaos, someone is forever hungry and one of the dogs has developed a fear of thunderstorms, which creates turmoil once the lights are out at nigh time. This entry is always lacking as much focus as myself, so here's a more concise update for those who have been sticking by me, via this site:

Niggles: She is now a whopping 18lbs, has two front (very sharp) teeth and in a hurry to crawl. The most common question I get asked (always by other mothers)is, "is she sleeping through the night?". Unfortunately, no, but getting up at 3am involves less stamina than letting her hungrily cry it out. I've been told that it only takes about three nights, but these days, every second of sleep counts, so I'm putting that challenge on hold. After a month of messy playing with food, she now eats solids and there is nothing so far she has refused. What can't be more satisfying than watching my children enjoy home cooked food - even if it is just a mushed up banana.

She really has changed my life. I love being with her.

L: In the space of just a few months she is now reading and writing. I'm honestly shocked at how much she can read. I no longer can wear my holga bitch and SX70 tshirts, because I don't want to get into THAT discussion with her. I even have to be careful what I spell out to Bob, because she'll dwell on it for days. She is loving her sister, and has truly stepped up to the responsibilities that being a big sister brings with it. There is the occasional sulk, and jealous behaviour, but overall I think we got off easy. This summer I hope to catch up on large format portraits of her. We stocked up on a few boxes of Polaroid 55, that will be a perfect fit.

Lainey, Griffin and Saydie: Lainey has becoming miss bossy boss, no longer the shy dog that arrived here from America. Griffin is aging very quickly, and has resulted in some costly vet bills and white eyebrows. Saydie, as I mentioned before, has becoming neurotic about thunderstorms and is driving us insane at night, with her panting and shaking. At least they all get along.

Bob: If you check out his blog, you'll find out how fatherhood is treating him this year. I just couldn't imagine a life without him.

Me: I've been working on a combination of silk screening and sewing vintage fabric. I sold my tablesaw on Craig's list and bought myself a serger (which I have been lusting after for years). I'm sad to see the end of a woodworking era, but most of my tools have gone untouched since L was a baby, so it was time to clean out the basement and fix up the much needed space down there. I have visions of a playroom/sewing room, but for now I'm still clearing out paint cans and wood scraps. Luckily for me, I have a couple of new clients, who I adore, and have designed some satisfying work for, keeping my design skills alive. I'm also working on a couple of Blurb books, my design portfolio and a "film is not dead" project with Mr. Smith ... more details to come soon.

Tomorrow I plan to share a handful of links for sites that I have been following the last few months. My surfing time is so limited these days, but I have developed a few faves that kept me sane during those early months.

Time to get ready for L's summer concert. xo
